Harvested a late season Utah cow elk this year, on the Scofield West CWMU unit after 4 days of hunting. The cow elk was on the move, accompanied by a calf and a spike, at 400+ yards across a canyon through brush, timber and snow. I fired three intermittent shots with my Ruger M77 30-06 aiming high at the left rib cage as the cow was quartering away at a trot. After the third shot the elk had disappeared, and my son in law who was watching through his scope thought the second shot was a hit. I made my way to where the elk were last seen and found tracks, blood and hair. Followed the trail and found the cow elk dead 60 yards from where the tracks and blood were first identified. One bullet had entered the left hind quarter, just left of the tail, leaving a clear wound channel. Bullet traveled from point of entry and continued just under the spine penetrating into the vital organs causing massive blood loss. Upon discovering that the shot had hit in the left hind quarter, I was concerned the meat would be damaged significantly; however, upon processing the meat there was little damage beyond the bullet wound channel.
I’m extremely pleased with the accuracy, penetration and effective wound channel caused by this bullet. A shot that was a few inches off and through the hind quarter still resulted in a humane kill. I will continue to use this bullet in my 30-06 for all future big game hunts.
