Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the 178 grain ELD-X best for?

It's a long-range hunting bullet for 30-caliber rifles, built to expand reliably at close range and still open up at long distances. It's a popular choice in the .308 Winchester and .30-06 for deer and elk. In the .308, Varget is a common powder pairing for bullets in this weight range.

2. What is the ballistic coefficient of the 178 ELD-X?

Hornady lists the 178 grain ELD-X at a G1 BC of .552 and a G7 BC of .278, with a sectional density of .268. Hornady's minimum recommended twist is 1 in 12 inches, which covers most .308 Winchester and .30-06 hunting rifles. Compare it with our other 30-caliber rifle bullets by BC.

3. What's the difference between ELD-X and ELD Match?

ELD-X is a hunting bullet designed for controlled expansion on game. ELD Match is built for target accuracy and isn't intended for hunting. Both use Hornady's Heat Shield tip and have similar BCs. If you're shooting paper or steel, the 178 grain ELD Match is the better pick.

4. Is the 178 ELD-X good for elk?

Yes, at sensible ranges with good shot placement. Hornady rates the ELD-X for medium and large game, and the 178 grain is a common elk choice in the .308 and .30-06. If you're shooting a 300 magnum or want more weight, the 200 grain ELD-X is the next step up.

5. Where can I find load data for the 178 ELD-X?

Start with the current Hornady Handbook, which lists the ELD-X by name, and check the powder maker's data for your cartridge and bullet weight. Seat it to the overall length the data shows. Please make sure to follow the published data exactly.

Excellent accuracy, and great terminal performance! The 168gr in a 308win made sure they did not go far, if they even took a step. Leaves a nice big exit wound the lets all the air and fluid out for a nice humane harvest.
