Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is H4895 good for?

H4895 is one of the most versatile rifle powders Hodgdon sells. It started as a military powder for the .30-06 and works well in the .308, .223, and .243, all the way up to big bores like the .458 Win Mag. It's also a longtime choice for cast bullet loads.

2. Can H4895 be used for reduced loads?

Yes. Hodgdon publishes a reduced-load method for H4895: take the maximum charge Hodgdon lists for your cartridge and bullet, online or in its annual reloading manual, multiply it by 60%, and work up for accuracy. It's popular for youth hunting and low-recoil practice. The rule applies only to H4895, not IMR 4895 or other powders.

3. Is H4895 the same as IMR 4895?

No. Both trace back to the military 4895 and burn at a similar rate, but each has its own load data. If IMR 4895 is out of stock, H4895 is a reasonable switch as long as you start over with H4895 data. Never use IMR 4895 charge weights with it.

4. Where can I find H4895 load data?

Hodgdon's Reloading Data Center lists H4895 for a long list of cartridges, from the .17 Remington to the .458 Win Mag, and it's in most current reloading manuals. Pick the data that matches your exact bullet and case, and start at the listed starting charge.

5. Is H4895 temperature sensitive?

Not much. H4895 is in Hodgdon's Extreme line, which is designed to keep velocity steady between hot and cold weather. That makes it a solid pick for hunting loads you work up in summer and shoot in late fall. Varget and H4350 are built the same way.

fast shipping, well packed and a great price.

H4895 is my go powder for 30-06! I have not been able to find any for some time, probably years! I would love to get my hands on some!

Fast service!! Great to work with!

Using an ultra-light Remington 700 in .308 Win, I was able to consistently shoot under one inch at 200 yards using Win LR primers, Win case, 95% of H4895, with a Sierra 175 Gr. Match King bullet. This is an M118LR duplicate load

Thank you, the purchase was easy, received in about a week.

Quick, easy, no complaints

Hodgdon powders and Powder Valley quality and dependability had to beat.

Fast delivery, right prices, thanks.

Hodgdon powders never fail to get the job done. Supply is limited of course, but if you get lucky and Powder Valley ACTUALLY has them in stock instead of just stating they are AVAILABLE, and you are able to check out without PV stating your cart is actually EMPTY, then you can consider yourself one of the chosen ones.
